Postcard showing Wallace Moffat Carr
Postcard showing Wallace Moffat Carr
A postcard showing Wallace Moffat Carr and Silas John Davern. The image was submitted by Wendy Cassimaty who wrote:

“I believe the photo postcard I have in my possession is of Wallace Moffatt Carr taken during the First World War. A little background is probably needed here. My Grandfather served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1912 through to 1919. He was attached to a number of different ships and travelled the world. He kept a shoebox full of picture postcards and photo postcards from his time in the navy and just recently my sister Margaret and I have started going through them to see if we can find any with names on them so we can possibly pass them on to family members. We have no idea how or why the photo was with my grandfathers possessions. All I really can say is that the writing on the reverse is not my grandfather's.
I have attached the photo and scanned the reverse. As you can see the photo is of 2 gentlemen. The other gentleman appears to be a Silas John Davern and I think I may have found his grandson in the Northern Territory.

Reverse of photo of Andrew Mitchell and Betsy Brown
This is the reverse of another copy of the photo preceding title Andrew Mitchell and Betsy Brown. This photo is held by Bruce Larkin (USA) who is a descendant of Andrew Mitchell and Betsy Brown by their daughter Isabella Mitchell Thomson. The photo had ended up with Bruce's mother. The reverse indicates it was sent by the Mitchells to their grand daughter Mrs Kennedy.

"For Mrs. Kennedy with best wishes. A & B Mitchell". My mother annotated the photo: "Parents of Isabella Mitchell Thomson -- Andrew and Bethia Mitchell."

Sign at one entrance to Blakerston Farm.
Sign at one entrance to Blakerston Farm.
Blakerston Farm is part of St Bathans Estates - a 6000 acre farm originally owned by the Turnbull Family. Now it is a "game farm" raising about 80,000 pheasants each year for release in Britain and Europe for game hunting.
William (1825), Elisabeth (1829) and George (1831) Moffat were born here to George Moffat and Isabella Clark, presumably while George and/or Isabella worked on Blakerston Farm.
Visited by Roger Moffat and Lisa Christensen 21 June 2000.

A sign inside the church lists the “fewars” of the church - a “feuar” is one who holds a feu..

“A free and gratuitous right to lands made to one for service to be performed by him; a tenure where the vassal, in place of military services, makes a return in grain or in money”.

This church on the St Bathans properties may have been the church attended by George Moffat and his family in the 1820s. The house visible in the distance was "the Laird's House".
