2 "As a result of Christian Endeavour a band was formed of which Mr. Wells became a member and, with others he began to hold cottage meetings and to take services both in Church and the Taieri Mouth hall. For several years before his departure in 1910 he was superintendent of the Sunday School.

In early times...Sunday School teachers included Miss Margaret Russell, and Mrs. T. Agnew, formerly Mrs. John Russell, nee Miss Alice Fairbairn. Mrs. T.Agnew was a most faithful and loved teacher for over 30 yars.

Miss Jean Russell (Mrs. David Fairbairn) helped by playing the organ.

Taieri Beach Store: Mr. Arthur C.Wells bought the business in 1900, but in 1902 changed his premises to a hilltop at the top of the Taieri Beach-Waihola Rd. Charles Scott took over in 1910.

Source: probably "Coast, Road and River", but not named on the excerpts.

28 1 Ned was a well known character in South Otago, loved by the locals and frequently falling foul of the law. Said (in that area) to have been NZ's only bushranger, but there were others. He was a great bushman and seems to have enjoyed giving the police a hard time. Both my father (John Michael alias John William Cosgrove) and a Kenneally grandson tell of an occasion when he was being sought by 3 policeman in the bush, he managed to relieve them all of their firearms and, according to Dad, left them tied up as well. He seems to have visited retribution on anyone who did him a bad turn. On one occasion the publican at either Orepuki or Tuatapere "dobbed him in" to the police with the result that Ned opened all the hogsheads destined for that pub which were waiting to be unloaded at a railway siding with the result that there was beer flowing everywhere. The father of Sarah Leitch nee Bates always said that "Ned didn't do what the police said he did". I have wondered whether there is any connection between that statement and one by Sarah Cosgrove nee Neilson to my sister Ellen Whitehead that there was a murderer in the family. I read in a history of the area around Tuatapere etc that there had been a murder committed in the area and that the police were unable to obtain sufficient evidence to arrest the man they thought had done the deed. The account also stated that in 1920 a man made a death-bed confession at the Gore hospital. Ned died some years later.

When Ned was hiding out in the bush his mother and/or siblings used to leave food at a prearranged place for him.

The same source and another brother said that during the depression Ned held up the mill train from Invercargill, stole the payroll and distributed it among the people in the area who were in financial difficulty.
Cosgrove, Timothy Edmond (I11111)
