On Saturday evening last the 4th inst. A surprise visit was paid to the home of Mr and Mrs John Dewar, well known and esteemed residents of Alexandra by about 20 old friends, the occasion being the 90th birthday of Mr Dewar, whose residence in the districts of Roxburgh, Cromwell and Alexandra dates back to 1862.
Mr Wm. Fraser presented Mr Dewar with a memento of his old friends’ good will and esteem and made eulogistic reference to the recipients and also to Mrs Dewar’s long, useful and honourable life in the community, ending by expressing the hope that they would both be spared to enjoy a further span of many happy years together.
Other speakers endorsed the remarks made by Mr Fraser and with recitations the recounting of early reminiscences the partaking of a varied and sumptuous repast a very pleasant evening terminated with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
One of the visiting friends was Mrs Telford, another very old resident of the district, hale and hearty at the age of 86 and the founder of two generations in this community.
Opportunity was also taken of presenting a handsome morris chair to Mrs Dewar, In making the presentation on behalf of some of the returned soldiers and Mrs Dewar’s co-workers of the Patriotic Association, Mrs Black spoke in glowing terms of the services rendered by Mrs Dewar both during and after the war. Nothing was too much trouble to her and she took an active interest in every boy that left the district, Several other speakers endorsed Mrs Blacks remarks. Mrs Dewar was taken completely by surprise and in returning thanks stated that she had done nothing more than what she considered to be her duty. [Source 303] [5]
