Notes - Alexander McFarlane was a Hosepipe Weaver after he and his family moved to Dundee from Johnshaven. Prior to that, he followed the McFarlane traditional occupation of salmon fishing supplemented by weaving.
He is shown as a 'salmon fisher' in the 1881 Census, residing at Milne's Wynd, Johnshaven, in the Parish of Benholm, along with his wife Catherine and a daughter, Isabella (Auntie Belle).
On the 1901 Census, he is shown as a Canvas Hosepipe Weaver, residing at 27 North Ellen Street, Dundee, along with Catherine and nine children.
One of the nine, 'young' Alexander, my grandfather, was also a hosepipe weaver until he retired.
This is another case of moving from the countryside into the city, which in this case, was Dundee and the lure of the jute - big money and security, compared with salmon fishing (seasonal??) and working on the land.
Alexander McFarlane and Catherine Glass were married in the United Presbyterian Church, East Linton, in the Parish of Prestonkirk, in the County of Haddington. [4]
