Joan's Notes Above the old Hughan property lived the Caldwells, relatives of the Russells, the children early pupils at Akatore Coast School, and the teachers sometimes boarded there. Later Allisons occupied the property.

Mrs. D. Finlayson writes: "Those were happy days and the children sang like linties, teacher and pupils had long distances to walk, and no metal on the roads. We were all a little afraid of roaming pigs, but nobody came to grief. Ref. "Coast, Road and River"
