Notice of death of Alexander Moffat
Notice of death of Alexander Moffat
In Memory of
Alexander Moffat
Who died on the 5th September, 1888, on board the S. S Tarawera at Russell, Auckland.
The angel of death has come again
And taken away one.
Just in the very bloom of youth,
A brother and much loved son.
Far away from home, far away from friends.
Out upon the lonely sea,
Where the billows roar as in anger wild,
Thou dids't call him, Oh Lord, to Thee.
No mother was there with tender care,
To solace or shed a tear;
But a father was there to breathe a prayer,
And the last fond words to hear.
Yonder, now, in that home, once so full of mirth,
Father and mother for a son doth mourn;
Brothers and sisters grieve for a brother dear,
But to them he shall ne'er return.
Was he only a brother! Was he only a son!
Was he only a friend so true!
Ah! methinks I know a maiden who
Mourns this day - lov'd dead - for you.
Oh ! Father of Love, look down from above,
Now comfort such sorrowing one;
Say to them he's not lost - only gone on before!
My will, not thine, must be done.
