Obituary Woman served as mayoress for father in Alexandra dies

Alexandra. – A former mayoress of Alexandra, Mrs Fiona Mason, died earlier this month. She was 87.

Mrs Mason acted as mayoress on official occasions for her father, William Bringans, who was mayor of Alexandra from 1927 to 1940. Mr Bringan’s wife, Mary, had died in 1914.

Mrs Mason was only 19 when she took up her duties as mayoress and a friend, Mrs Jean Rooney, remembers her as a capable young woman.

“She handled her duties well and did a magnificent job as mayoress for her father,” Mrs Rooney said.

One of her tasks was to unveil the clock on the Otago Central Electric Power Board office in Tarbert St. The clock was dedicated to her father, who was a founder of the power board.

Born on an orchard in Conroys Gully, near Alexandra, in 1907, Mrs Mason was only 7 when her mother died. She and her brother, Stewart, later moved to Alexandra with their father.

Mr Bringans established a second orchard in Ventry St and as a young girl, Mrs Mason after school would join the local Chinese picking strawberries at the orchard.

Educated at the Alexandra District High School, Mrs Mason worked for a time on her father’s orchard before moving to Dunedin to work in a store.

She met her husband, the late Bert Mason, in Dunedin and the two married in 1937. The lived in Dunedin and Invercargill before shifting to Lower Hutt where Mr Mason worked for Shell Oil.

Early in her marriage she returned to Alexandra to act on official occasions as mayoress, a long-time friend, Mr Geoff Taylor, remembers.

Mrs Mason, a fine singer and talented pianist, was an early member of the Alexandra Musical Society. A keen swimmer, she also played tennis and hockey, Mr Taylor said.

After retiring in 1968, Mr and Mrs Mason moved back to Alexandra where they spent many days plying golf on the Alexandra golf course.  [3
