Emigration Note | They sailed almost immediately for Australia. [Source 3] William (Wm) and Ellen Moffat emigrated to Australia in Aug 1857 onboard the ship “Titan”. They are listed as 2 of 664 passengers on that voyage. [Source 53] The “Titan” sailed from Liverpool on 22 May 1857. William’s occupation listed as Farmer. Age given as 27. [Source 465] They were at Smeaton for 5 years, William carting supplies to the Victorian gold fields. It has been suggested that he may have been employed at Anderson’s Flour Mill at Smeaton and supplying the mining settlements with flour. 3 children were born in Australia. [Source 313] At the beginning of 1862 the Moffat family sailed for New Zealand where the Houliston family were already planning to buy land. They came first to East Taieri where William worked on Mr Todd's farm for a year or two. [Source 3] [1, 8, 9, 10]

From Here A Name | On May 25th, 1830, to George Moffat and Isabella (nee Clark) at Blakerstone, Berwickshire, Scotland, was born a son, William. [Source 3] William died while still in his prime. He contracted a foot injury which necessitated the amputation of his leg. This was done in the Ellenslea home by the local Dr Smith, assisted by Dr Fitzgerald, of Kaitangata. One room was emptied of its furniture and here on the kitchen table, the operation was performed. Although he survived the operation, gangrene set in and he died soon afterwards. [Source 3] [1]
Obituary | FREE PRESS September 1895 Another old identity of the Clutha passed away on Sunday morning in the person of Mr William Moffat of Te Houka. Mr Moffat had been confined to the house for the last three months with a bad foot, but no serious consequence was thought of until his medical advisor, Dr Smith, considered the patient's foot would have to amputated about three weeks ago. The operation was successfully performed by Drs Smith and Fitzgerald and all went well until about ten days ago when Mr Moffat's spirits went down and he gradually got weaker, until he quietly passed away surrounded by members of his family. Mr Moffat was a native of Berwickshire, Scotland and was a well known resident of the Clutha, to which district he came over 30 years ago. His intimate friends have noticed him failing ever since the shock of his son Alick's death, which took place on the way to Sydney several years ago. Though of a retiring disposition he took an interest in all the doings of the welfare of the district. He is survived by a widow and four sons and three daughters (two sons and a daughter married). Mrs Moffat and family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The funeral on Tuesday was a large one, followed by no less than 34 vehicles, 37 horsemen and a number on foot. [Source 319] THE CLUTHA LEADER September 13, 1895 page 5 THE LATE MR WM. MOFFAT. It is with sincere regret that we have this week to record the death of Mr William Moffat, of Te Houka, which took place on Sunday last. Till about 3 months ago Mr Moffat enjoyed the best of health, but an operation on one of his legs requiring its amputation between the knee and the ankle was found necessary. From the effects of this he never recovered, though as far as the operation itself was concerned the recovery was satisfactory. But he became very low spirited, and almost from the first fully made up his mind that he would never recover. Mr Moffat was born in Blackerston, Berwickshire. He left home in 1857 for Australia, just previously getting married to one of the Houliston’s, but came on to New Zealand in 1862. For a year or so he worked in the East Taieri, and in 1863 he came to a farm he had acquired at Te Houka, on which he resided till the the time of his death. During his 32 years residence in the Clutha Mr Moffat made many friends and became widely known and respected. He was of a kindly disposition, and was an obliging and agreable neighbour, In addition to his wife a family of four sond and three daughters survive him. His funeral took place on Tuesday, and the cortege was one of the largest seen in the district. As will be seen in our obituary notices a sister of Mr Moffat’s died in New South Wales in July last.[Source 2500] [11, 12]

Now it is a "game farm" raising about 80,000 pheasants each year for release in Britain and Europe for game hunting. William (1825), Elisabeth (1829) and George (1831) Moffat were born here to George Moffat and Isabella Clark, presumably while George and/or Isabella worked on Blakerston Farm.
