Joan's Notes Excerpt from Cyclopaedia of NZ (Otago) P 's 658-659: MILNE, James, Farmer, Taieri Beach: "Mr. Milne was born in Cupar, Fife, Scotland in 1840 and during his youth served an apprenticeship to the pattern making and joinery trade. He came to NZ in Sep 1862 in the ship "Robert Henderson" and was for two years engaged in the building trade in Dunedin. In 1865 Mr. Milne, with his parents, moved to Taieri Beach and began farming. Mr. Milne's farm consists of 380 acres of freehold land and 200 acres of leasehold and he keeps about 600 Leicester/Merino crossbred sheep, the lambs of which are fattened for the market. From 1874 to 1876 he held the appointment of Inspector of Public Works, under the Provincial Government, and superintended the construction of bridges at Shag River and at Inchclutha, Stirling; so well was the work carried out that both bridges (1904) are still standing and seem likely to last for years to come. Mr. Milne is a Member of the Taieri Beach school committee and was formerly a member of the Waihola Road Board. He was married in 1876 to a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas McDonald of Inchclutha and there is a family of six sons and one daughter. Mr. Milne is a Justice of the Peace for the Colony". --------------------------------

James Milne was the first of this family to migrate to New Zealand. He was a passenger on the fast clipper "Robert Henderson" on her fourth voyage. She arrived at Bluff in September 1862. On the voyage passengers had to bring most of their own food, but James had been well provided for in this respect by his thoughtful step-mother and his sisters. He carried on the farm at Taieri Beach and was a useful citizen not only in his own district, but further afield. Farm work was not his strong point and when, after 10 years at the home farm, he joined the staff of the Public Works department and was appointed Inspector of Bridges, he found more congenial employment. James married Rebecca MCDONALD of Inch Clutha in November 1876. She had arrived in Otago by the "Helenslee" in 1868. He was a man of many parts, a wide reader, a good mathematician, builder, chess player, laypreacher, choirmaster and a good tenor singer. He could play the piano, organ, violin and flute, and also made violins. His son David took over the farm in due course and spent much of his life getting the farm into proper order and paying off farm-related debts for his father.  [1
