Joan's Notes Hugh Russell, with his wife, formerly Margaret Caldwell, arrived in Otago by the "Stormcloud" in April 1860. They were accompanied by their sons, John, James, Hugh and William. They took up land, first at Green Island where the others of the family were born: Clement, Margaret and Jessie, but after seven years the family went to Taieri Beach. In May 1863 Hugh Russell made a successful application for land. In 1865 he and his sons, John and James, took possession and erected a stone and clay dwelling thereon. The family arrived in 1868; in 1872 Townsends section on the other side of the road was added to the property. The old house was a two-storeyed building with clay and ferntree walls on stone foundations with three rooms below and sleeping accomodation for the boys in the two rooms in the loft, which was reached by a ladder from inside; but in 1879 Thomas Agnew describes building a new house.. a two storeyed building with four rooms below and two above stairs, the upstairs windows being of the old fashioned projecting kind still to be seen on old houses here and there in the Otago country districts.Hugh Russell was very fond of all trees. He died at Taieri Beach in 1886, but Granny lived for another 27 years, dying at the age of at least 91.

John, the eldest son was an expert harvester and shearer, but did not reside permanently on the Beach until his marriage with Alice, Robert Fairbairn's daughter. The couple lived first on the Kuri side of Taieri Mouth and later in a cottage above Knarston's store. Here John commenced fishing with an expectation of making a better living than by casual labour, but he and his three friends were all drowned when their boat struck the bar at Taieri Mouth. He left one daughter, Mrs. David Milne and his son, John was born a few months after the accident.

Hugh Russell was a very staunch Orangeman and was involved in a violent incident and received serious injuries from which he never fully recovered, spending the last years of his life as an invalid.

Hugh and Margaret did not speak to one another for a great number of years. At one stage their children attemped to negotiate a settlement in the hope that their parents would become friends again. The parents were approached individually to ascertain whether they were prepared to co-operate and both indicated that they would. However, when the actual moment arrived, Margaret walked into her husband's room, took one look at him and walked out again. I should add that Margaret nursed her husband in silence during the years he was confined to bed. If there was need of communication the children acted as go-betweens!  [1
