ADAM HOULISTON MOFFAT (1869 – 1947)
Adam was the seventh child in William and Ellen Moffat’s family. Born at Ellenslea in 1869 in the sod house, he lived there until the wooden house was built.
He attended Te Houka school and later joined George at “Blink Bonnie” and when the property was split, he took up the farm which later became “Newfield”. For a time he lived in a hut until 1905 when he married Isabella Hunter of ‘Viewbank’ and built the house.
Before marriage Adam belonged to the Mounted rifles movement and enjoyed attending camps with “the boys”.
He and Isabella raised a family of five. A buggy and a pair of horses was their mode of travel for many years until around 1920, when the first car — a Nash, — was acquired.
As the family grew up, Adam served on the Te Houka school committee, was a member of the Loyal Dolton Lodge and an ardent member and successful exhibitor at Agricultural and Pastoral Society.
He carried on his farming life until his death in 1947.
