ALEXANDER MOFFAT (1864 – 1888)

Alexander was the 5th child and third son of William and Ellen Moffat.

He didn’t become a farmer, but worked in Ryrie’s Store in Balclutha, boarding with his aunt and uncle the Robert Houlistons Jnr. However he maintained an interest in agricultural affairs as we have a minute book of the Clutha County Ploughing Match and the Secretary was A Moffat Jnr. (with “Alex Moffat” a committee member.) There has been a suggestion made that he was engaged to Ann Fahey, who was later to become Mrs George Moffat. In his early twenties he contracted tuberculosis, and was advised to take a sea voyage to aid his recovery. So accompanied by his father, he set sail for Australia aboard the SS “Tarawera”. Sadly Alexander died at sea and William with Alexander’s body was put ashore at Russell. Here in the cemetery Alexander was buried. his stone is still to be seen.
