Moffat, William

William and Ellen Moffat and their family, from Berwickshire in Scotland, along with Ellen's parents and family, settled at Te Houka in 1863. The Land Register records that William Moffat and Robert Howlison (actually Houliston) bought 210 acres as tenants-in-common. The Moffats of'Ellenslea' had five sons and four daughters, four of the sons becoming farmers in the locality. George farmed 'Blink Bonnie', Robert leased his farms, Adam got 'New Field', and Will took over the original purchases. That generation took an active part in school and church activities, stud stock breeding, and the South Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society - all interests carried on by subsequent generations.

The next generation comprised Bill at 'Blink Bonnie', Ernest at 'Glenavon', Arthur at 'New Field', and Maurice at 'Ellenslea'. They were followed by Neville Moffat, whose long-time interests included Telford Rural Polytechnic and several breeds of stud stock. Part of 'Blink Bonnie' is now held by daughter Cathy McArthur. Peter was involved long-term with both the South Otago Pest Board and the South Otago Forestry Association, but has now sold his farm 'Glenavon'. Graham is also involved with Telford Polytechnic and has absorbed the larger part of 'Blink Bonnie'. Donald has also moved off 'Ellenslea' after many years organisational involvement with the Otago shearing and New Zealand wool-handling competitions. These four have all been involved with the Young Farmers Club movement. Most of the youngest generation have had tertiary education and are in various occupations, some academic and some in technology. Some are living in Australia and the United States.
