William Boag Murray[1]

-
Gender Male Joan's Notes William Murray worked on the Haig Estate in Dollar and Margaret Wright, his wife, was a nursery governess or maid (there are two differing reports) for Earl Haig who was then Commander in Chief, Armed Forces during the 1st World War. The house where Margaret was born had 40 rooms and she was educated at Dollar Acadamy. One of her sisters went to Canada. There is a rumour that she was related to Sir Thomas McKenzie, but that is as yet unproven. William and Margaret brought the former's half brother James Ramsay or Alexander to New Zealand since their mother had died subsequent to the birth of her only daughter Elizabeth Ramsay or Syme in 1876. Their mother never married. William and Margaret came to NZ in 1879 and settled at Millers Flat in Otago where Margaret was known for the willing assistance she gave to people with problems. She also wrote letters for many people since educated people were and was known for the willing assistance to those in need. There were 10 children in their family. Of these William, James and Margaret did not marry. The former was a tin miner and worked in Africa, Malaysia and Burma before going to London where he died. James won a military medal in Gallipoli. Maggie was deaf and dumb and after the death of her father she went to live with the Little Sister's of the Poor in Anderson's Bay, Dunedin. At one stage William Boag M. was a dredge master on the Clutha River and later worked on the dredge "Waimumu Queen" which was situated near Gore. Four of the Murray children joined the Catholic Church. James, William Boag's half brother, worked for the Gas Company in Dunedin. Fred Murray's son Magnus is a priest and Don is a Christian Brother at St. Kevin's College, Oamaru. Milly and Arthur Welsh were on board the "Wahine" when it sank at the entrance to Wellington Harbour. Both survived. Their son, Lewis was one of the first men to leave Gore in the second World War, being in the first echelon. He was wounded in Crete and invalided home.
