CLUTHA LEADER — 7 February 1911
A very pleasant family gathering took place at "Ellenslea" on Thursday evening when the members of the Moffat family gathered at the residence of Mrs Moffat Snr. The gathering was quite a surprise party, and when the horses and traps laden with sons and daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren drew up at the house at 5:30pm she naturally wondered what had overcome the place. However she was not long kept in doubt for the passengers quickly alighted and laden with provisions for a good time soon took possession of the house, and after mutual felicitations the children and the children's children into the 4th generation soon entertained themselves and each other, and the worthy "head of the house" as well, to a sumptuous tea on the beautifully sheltered lawn.
The Moffat family comprised of the mother herself, four sons and their wives, one daughter and her husband, two sons-in-law, 35 grandchildren, the husbands of two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren - Total of 53.
In addition there were several brothers of Mrs Moffat Snr. and a number of old and personal friends which brought the total assembled to 70.
In the evening 'til dark the young folk, and many of the older ones as well, indulged in various games and fun, and later on the barn was cleared and dancing was indulged in for an hour or two to the inspiring music provided by S H McKay. Before the party separated Mr Gilbert McKay offered a few words of good wishes and congratulations. He said he was glad to see so many present which he thought would make a record family gathering. He was pleased to see Mrs Moffat so well and strong and able to enjoy herself and find pleasure in a gathering such as they had had. He wished her many years yet of good health and strength, and hoped the family circle would continue to gather on many future occasions. Three hearty cheers were given on his call for Mrs Moffat and with hearty good-buys a very pleasant reunion cane to an end.
Mrs Moffat not withstanding advancing years maintains good health and spirits and is "hale and hearty" in every way. It is 48 1/2 years since she landed in New Zealand and has been in Te Houka for the long period of 46 years. There have been several gatherings of family and descendants at her place, but the one last week is the first at which all were present.
